I am no longer a Liberal

Nor am I a conservative or a libertarian, a socialist, a communist, or an espouser of free radicals. These are labels, I am do not like being labeled. Because by picking a label, you now have to become all that that label thinks of itself and what everyone else thinks about you. In one sense, you must now stop thinking for yourself and I for one will never stop thinking for myself. I can sense that many reading this are saying, I’m liberal and I think for myself!

Personal Rights vs. Community Rights

Recently, I’ve gotten into an argument with a few Libertarians over the right of a person to not be judged because their blood alcohol level was over .08, but rather by their actions. My argument was that the act of drinking to excess was in itself an action that could harm the community, while their argument was that that was their personal freedom to do so. And so this debate has shown me the difference between me and them.

The Purpose of Protest

I grew up during the 60’s. I saw and kind of participated in the protest against the Vietnam War. I guess doing what everyone else was doing, I went along. During those war years and as I got closer to draft age, I worried, like all young men did. We all knew the war was bad, but we really didn’t want to be forced into the service. I have very bad eyes and probably had a deferment, but all it took was an Army doctor saying that my eyes weren’t that bad and I was in.

Immigration and Money

One of the biggest problem we have in the country is need for jobs. If you can create jobs, you can start up the economy. But jobs need an economy to start. Well, there are jobs here. Not just illegal worker jobs, but real jobs. But companies want to keep wages low, so they use any means possible to do so. Hire illegal workers or bring in legal workers through the H-1B and H-2B system.
